Dear SRJC Community,
I imagine that many of you stayed up late last night following the results of the local, state, and national elections. Exercising one’s right to vote can evoke strong emotions – whether pride in having your voice heard, or frustration when it feels devalued. Some will celebrate the results of local elections, measures, or statewide outcomes. For others, it serves as a reminder of the many ways our democratic society must still grow to realize a more just and equitable community.
Our SRJC community can be the example of how our interactions with one another can create a community where students and colleagues feel safe, valued, and respected. Regardless of our political beliefs, we all share a commitment to the mission that unites us as an institution of higher education:
“Santa Rosa Junior College transforms the lives of our culturally rich student body, employees, and community by cultivating a welcoming and antiracist environment, centered on social responsibility and cultural awareness. We offer exceptional teaching and learning in support of associate degree, certificate, transfer preparation, workforce preparation and community education programs, integrated with comprehensive student support services.”
It is in our humanity where we can find a way forward, rooted in our values.
Throughout the coming weeks, post-election activities and resources will be available to educate and support students and employees. The impact of the election can be swift and deep, so I encourage you to take advantage of these resources to care for your well-being. Like many of you, I am feeling the impact on a professional level as a colleague, as well as on a personal level as a mother, daughter, wife, and part of several communities whose existence and rights are being threatened. However, with support from the Board of Trustees, my commitment to providing stable and mission-centered leadership is a top priority. And with your support, SRJC can continue to be a safe community for students and employees.
Let us continue to care for one another and build a community that reflects the values we hold dear.
In Community,
Dr. Garcia
