Commencement and District Closures: Honoring a Week of Reflection and Celebration

May 22, 2025
Dear SRJC Colleagues,

With the end of the academic year upon us, we have an opportunity to reflect on all that’s been accomplished. Across classrooms, offices, and campuses, your work has helped students grow, persist, and reach meaningful goals. Thank you for the care and commitment you’ve shown throughout the year.

This week brings several important moments for our community. We’ll come together to celebrate student achievement at Celebrate CE on Friday and Commencement on Saturday. The District will also close in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, and in recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Day of Reflection on Tuesday, May 27. These final days offer a chance to honor our students, recognize our shared values, and look ahead with purpose.

Celebrate CE highlights the achievements of students in our Career Education programs—fields that are critical to the vitality of our region. These students are entering careers in healthcare, business, public safety, and more, equipped with skills and experience that will benefit their communities from day one. Join us on Friday, May 23 at 5:00 p.m. in Haehl Pavilion to recognize their accomplishments and the faculty and staff who have supported them along the way.

Commencement is one of SRJC’s most cherished traditions. It’s a joyful celebration of the determination and growth we’ve witnessed throughout the year. I hope you’ll join us as we honor the Class of 2025 and the many ways they have contributed to the life of this District. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 24 at 9:00 a.m. at Bailey Field.

As we prepare for the long weekend, Memorial Day reminds us to pause and reflect on the lives lost in service to this country. For many in our community, this day carries personal significance. I encourage all of us to take a moment of remembrance, gratitude, or quiet reflection.

On Tuesday, May 27, the District will observe Asian American and Pacific Islander Day. This day honors the cultures, contributions, and experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, both within SRJC and beyond. It also reflects our continued commitment to equity, inclusion, and learning from one another. Recently at the May city council meeting in Petaluma, council members voted to rename Center Park to the Historic Chinatown Park, in recognition of the contributions of Chinese immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. SRJC is a part of the broader Sonoma County community and is proud to have former President, Dr. Frank Chong as an influential Chinese-American leader to advocate for renaming the park.

Thank you once again for all that you do. I look forward to celebrating with many of you in the days ahead.
