March 12, 2025, Santa Rosa, CA – The Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Multicultural Museum proudly presents “The Storyteller’s Hands: Carvings and Teachings of Bun Lucas,” an exhibit honoring the legacy of Milton “Bun” Lucas (1925-1996), a revered elder of Pomo and Miwok descent. The exhibit will be on display at the SRJC Museum from March 24 – June 26, 2025, with a special reception on Friday, April 4, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM in the Student Activities Center in Bertolini Hall.

A respected spiritual leader of the Stewarts Point/Kashia Pomo community, Bun Lucas dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the cultural traditions of his people. Through Native dance, song, and storytelling, he passed down the origin stories of the Pomo and Coast Miwok peoples, fostering deep connections to ancestral roots.

From an early age, Bun Lucas demonstrated remarkable skill as a woodcarver, using his grandfather’s pocket knife to shape intricate carvings of animals and human figures. His artwork, often sold at local venues such as Midgley’s Flea Market in Sebastopol, was recognized in a 1979 Press Democrat article, highlighting his passion for sharing his heritage through art.

This exhibition will showcase Bun Lucas’s exquisite carvings, alongside stories and teachings that reflect his profound cultural influence. The accompanying reception on April 4 will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn more about his life, artistic contributions, and the enduring impact of his work.
