April 14, 2021, Santa Rosa, CA – Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Student Life Equity and Engagement has invited student clubs, college departments, and outside community organizations to create a shared vision of a Livable Future for All. Inspired by art organizer David Solnit’s Climate Justice Arts Project, the Earth Day Street Mural event continues the day’s history of environmental activism on college campuses and connects SRJC to the broader community. The mural also provides an in-person opportunity for student re-engagement and social connectedness after two difficult years of remote learning.
The main event will take place Friday, April 22, 2022, from 9 am to 12 pm, on Elliot Avenue.
This temporary installation will be created with non-toxic materials. Paint made from ashes and reclaimed natural materials from California wildfires will be used to acknowledge those affected by the recent wildfires and honor the community’s collective resilience.
Groups have been asked to share their perspectives about the impacts of climate fires and climate chaos on our communities and their proposed solutions. Contributors will design and paint 12’ circles within a larger mural, which will stretch along Elliot Avenue from Plover Hall to Albany Drive. A Native basket design and the words, "For All," painted in different languages will tie the mural together.
Individual participants are also welcome and can show up on the morning of the event.
On-site training at Santa Rosa Junior College will take place on Sunday, April 17, from 12 to 2 pm. Groups can work on layouts with art consultants and staff from 2 to 4 pm.
The painting will take place on Friday, April 22 from 9 am to 12 pm. Supplies, including chalk, chalk sticks, string, brushes, rags, containers, and water, will be available. Tempera paint, clay paint, and grey and black paint made from wildfire ash and charcoal will also be provided.
Participants are asked to bring a water bottle and sun protection and to wear paint-friendly clothing.
