Dear SRJC Community,

On Monday, January 19, 2026, all SRJC campuses and sites will be closed in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This is a time to honor Dr. King’s legacy and the values he advanced through his leadership, scholarship, and moral clarity.

Dr. King spoke often about the role of education in shaping a just society. He reminded us that education must develop both intellect and character, writing, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” As I reflect on what it means to be a person of character, I am reminded that our actions, thoughts, and habits shape much of how we show up in the world. 

This year’s observance takes place during a period of heightened national tension. Recent immigration enforcement activity and public response in parts of the country have surfaced fear and uncertainty for many individuals and families. Take the case of SFAA (Student for Fair Admissions) vs. Department of Education, pending in the Tennessee courts, challenging the constitutionality of federal grants for Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Moments like this underscore the continued relevance of Dr. King’s call for justice, dignity, and compassion grounded in action.

At SRJC, our mission calls us to foster learning environments where students are treated with respect, supported in their goals, and able to engage fully in their education. Our work remains rooted in equity, access, and care for the communities we serve.
