October 9, 2025
Dear SRJC Community,
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, SRJC will test its emergency alert system across all campuses and sites by holding an earthquake alert test as part of the International ShakeOut Day. We invite you to participate, if you are able and available.
When?
The drill will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10:46 am.
How will the test and drill work?
The test will provide an opportunity for a DROP, COVER & HOLD ON drill and will take about five minutes to complete. This is not an evacuation drill, but please take a moment to review evacuation routes in your building.
You will receive an SRJC Alert by email. If you signed up for text alerts, you will also receive a text message. The alert will also be broadcast through District office phones, appearing on screen and audibly over the speaker system. No action will be required of you unless your class/department is participating in a drill.
Are you signed up for SRJC Alerts?
Employees’ work email accounts are automatically entered into the SRJC Alert system. However, due to privacy laws, employees must opt in if they wish to receive alerts by text on personal devices. We strongly recommend that employees complete this step through the Escape Employee Online Portal. Opting in ensures that potentially lifesaving notifications can reach you directly on your phone in the event of a disaster or emergency affecting SRJC.
What should you do during the drill?
Participants should practice “DROP, COVER, HOLD ON”
- DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!)
- COVER your head and neck with your arms and, if possible, take shelter under a sturdy desk or table.
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
Immediately after the initial shaking stops, evacuation is recommended.
Instructional videos are available for additional guidance, including what to do without cover or with mobility considerations.
- What to do in an earthquake when you have a table nearby
- What to do if there is nothing to hide under
- What to do if you have (permanent or temporary) mobility issues
For more information on emergency planning and resources, visit SRJC’s Emergency Management website.
Thank you for taking an active part in this important safety drill. Practicing together only strengthens our ability to respond quickly and effectively in the event of an earthquake.
