Celebrating Labor Day 2025 – District Closure September 1, 2025

August 29, 2025

Dear SRJC Community,

SRJC will observe Labor Day on Monday, September 1, 2025. All sites and campuses will be closed and regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

As we observe Labor Day, we honor the dignity of work and the people whose daily efforts keep communities moving while also allowing ourselves a brief pause. The first weeks of the semester place real demands on everyone, from the classroom and front desks to labs and fields, and I am grateful for the care you extend to students and colleagues. That steadiness builds trust and makes learning possible.

Labor Day also grew from people coming together to improve work and care for one another. I see that spirit here in the small, steady acts that define SRJC—answering questions during the rush and walking a student to the right office. That shared care is how we make room for learning.

Thank you for all that you do. I hope the long weekend offers a measure of rest, and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
