Update on Participatory Governance Structure Redesign

April 18, 2024
Dear SRJC Community,

On behalf of the College Council, we are writing to provide an update on the redesign of our participatory governance structure.

As shared in our April 7 communication, College Council has been working to realign our governance structure into a more streamlined and transparent structure for decision-making across the district. In response to recent questions and feedback, we want to reaffirm that the important work previously carried out by many of the committees, including those being restructured, will continue. These functions are being integrated into the new structure or relevant operational areas to ensure greater efficiency and alignment with our current goals.

Based on feedback received thus far, recent updates include:

  • Clearly distinguishing Academic Senate Consultation Committees from Academic Senate sub-committees
  • Removing the Professional Growth Increment Committee
  • Adding a Generative Artificial Intelligence Taskforce, as recommended by the Academic Senate and approved by College Council

The proposed governance structure is undergoing final review and is scheduled for a final review by College Council at its May 15 meeting for recommendation and approval at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees on June 10, 2025. While we typically avoid bringing significant structural changes for Board approval during the summer, this timeline is critical to allow for fall appointments and to ensure committees are ready to begin their work by October for the 2025–26 academic year. As tri-chairs, we extend our sincere gratitude to all constituent group representatives for their diligent efforts and collaborative approach in identifying solutions and maintaining momentum.

Committee appointment calls will begin in early fall, so we encourage you to watch for announcements from your respective constituent groups. To support this process, we have developed a new web page outlining the revised governance structure and updated committee charges. This page will be updated throughout the consultation process, and we encourage you to check it regularly for the latest information.

We appreciate your continued engagement and support as we work toward a governance model that better serves our college community.

Sincerely,

College Council Tri-Chairs

Dr. Angelica Garcia, Superintendent/President
John Stover, Academic Senate President
Linda Jay, Classified Senate President
