Dear SRJC Community,
“We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As we prepare to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, these words remind us of the depth of Dr. King’s vision and how it continues to shape our understanding of justice, equity, and education. They resonate deeply with our mission at SRJC, challenging us to go beyond academic excellence and embrace a life guided by integrity, compassion, and a commitment to the greater good.
In honor of Dr. King’s extraordinary leadership and justice work, all SRJC campuses will be closed on Monday, January 20th. I encourage you to use this day as an opportunity to reflect on how we, as individuals and as a community, can advance the principles of equitable justice in all that we do.
This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day also coincides with the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, marking a moment of national transition that brings mixed emotions for many. The juxtaposition of celebrating Dr. King’s legacy of advancing racial equity and justice with the inauguration of a President whose actions and policies have often challenged those ideals is striking. This alignment serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing importance of engagement, leadership, and our shared responsibilities in building a culture and community at SRJC that embraces and empowers diversity while striving for a more just and united future.
Thank you for being part of a college that strives to embody these ideals. Together, let’s continue to create pathways for learning, growth, and meaningful change.
In Community,
Dr. Garcia
