Dear SRJC Community, 

I’m pleased to share that the District is engaging in a broad evaluation of our shared governance structure. One of the comments I have heard consistently from all constituent groups this fall is a general lack of clarity and understanding for the various committees within our shared governance system. Our shared governance system must provide clear communication, processes, and decision-making so we can serve our students and community. 

We are collaborating with all shared governance committees to evaluate and understand their role and will be sharing more details at a later time. However, I have received one early finding, from discussions that had been occurring for many years, which is leading to actionable change right now. Many facilities-related conversations were happening in multiple committees, creating confusion and conflicting recommendations, as well as additional workload on those providing report outs.  
 

After discussion with the affected committees, on October 19, 2023, College Council approved the consolidation of committees related to facilities. The outcome of this consolidation was:

• The creation of one committee charged with facilities-related matters - the District Facilities Advisory Committee (DFAC) to replace these three committees: 
  • the District Facilities Planning Committee,  
  • the District Safety and Health Committee
  • the Parking and Transportation Committee 
• The transportation portion of the Parking and Transportation Committee’s charge will shift to the Sustainability Committee 
• The facilities-related portion of the District Access Committee will shift to the DFAC 

You can find the new charge and committee makeup of the DFAC here. We will be requesting appointments from the various constituent groups for the DFAC shortly.  

I want to thank all who have served on these committees for their work and look forward to working with the new District Facilities Advisory Committee.
