February 27, 2024 - Santa Rosa, CA — The Santa Rosa Junior College Symphonic Chorus and Chamber Singers, with guest artists musical duo “Prudencio y Jesusa”, will present a concert of favorite Mexican songs on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at 7:30 pm at Burbank Auditorium at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) campus, 1501 Mendocino Ave.
The program, titled Uniendo Corazones/Uniting Hearts, will move the audience to dance and sing along to hits like La Adelita, Cucurrucucú Paloma, Aires del Mayab, Veracruz, and many more. Prudencio y Jesusa are multidisciplinary artists, professors, directors of children's choirs, researchers, creators of musical, literary and pictorial works and musicians with more than four decades of experience in various settings with a dozen albums.
Prudencio y Jesusa have toured Germany, France, Belgium, Bolivia, and Chile at the invitation of many cultural institutions. They have performed at international festivals, Musical June, Xalapa, Santiago de Querétaro Festivals, Cuban Culture Festival, The House of the Poet, School of Music: Metropolitan Theater in Querétaro, Live Japan, International Book Fair, Palacio de Minería CDMX and more.
The Santa Rosa Junior College Bands will present Dancing on Water on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 7:30 pm at Burbank Auditorium at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) campus, 1501 Mendocino Ave. SRJC Jazz Band features trumpet soloist Julien Knowles performing the waltz-like Walk on Water and lush sounds in Chelsea Bridge. The Symphonic Band performs selections from Handel's iconic Water Music Suite and rhythmically-surprising Blue Lake Overture as well as the spiritual-inspired New Wade 'n Water by Adolphus Cornelius Hailstork III and Minnesota-lake-inspired Stillwater, composed by Kelijah Dunton. .
The Santa Rosa Junior College Orchestra will present a concert under the direction of its Music Director Cynthia Weichel, on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 7:30 pm at Burbank Auditorium at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) campus, 1501 Mendocino Ave.
The concert features a variety of music, all by American composers, including:
- Hoe-Down, from Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo
- The American Frontier, a medley of early American folk music
- Rocky Mountain Majesty, featuring actual sounds of wildlife for the centennial celebration of the Rocky Mountain National Park
- Dance Rhythms, by Wallingford Riegger
- American Salute, by Morton Gould
- Overture to Candide, by Leonard Bernstein
- Elegy, by John Corigliano
- Symphony No. 2., subtitled Romantic, by Howard Hanson
The 62-piece orchestra represents college students and community members from all over Sonoma County.
Conductor, Cynthia Weichel, celebrates her 25th year on the faculty of the Music Department at the SRJC, where she teaches Classical Music Appreciation, Survey of American Music, and Music History and is the studio violin/viola instructor. This year also marks her 15th season as conductor of the SRJC Orchestra. Weichel is a native of Santa Rosa and an alumna of SRJC. She received her Bachelor’s degree in music from Sonoma State University and a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from CSU, Sacramento. Ms. Weichel has been conducting orchestras in Sonoma County for over 35 years. She is currently the Founder/Conductor of the North Bay Sinfonietta and the popular Symphonic Reading Orchestra. She was also the Assistant Conductor of the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestras for over 10 years. As a professional violinist, she has been a member of the Santa Rosa Symphony and was a member of the Napa Valley Symphony for over 20 years.
